Transliteration /ṣalāt al-āyāt/
Arabic صلاة الآيات

Ṣalāt al-āyāt is the special two-rakʿat prayer triggered by particular natural events: a solar or lunar eclipse, an earthquake, and other extraordinary signs that traditionally produced fear in the community.

Form

Two rakʿats with five rukūʿs each. Best performed at the time of the event itself, otherwise as soon as feasible.

Hayd interaction (marja-divergent)

This is one of the engine’s interesting divergence points:

  • A. Sistani. Per Ruling 1355, the general exemption from prayers during hayd extends to ṣalāt al-āyāt. No qada owed.
  • A. Khomeini / A. Khamenei. Tahrir al-Wasilah Vol I l. 2175-2180 explicitly requires qada for non-daily prayers missed during hayd, including ṣalāt al-āyāt, ṭawāf prayer, and votive (nadhr) prayers.

The Tuhr app handles this correctly per the user’s marja and surfaces the obligation in the qada list when applicable.

  • Qada. Make-up worship.

Primary sources

  • A. Sistani · 1355 Prayers missed during hayd or nifas are not made up

With regard to someone who has not performed his daily prayers within their prescribed time, he must make them up even if he slept throughout the prescribed time or did not perform them on account of being intoxicated. The same applies to any other obligatory prayer that was not performed within its prescribed time, even, based on obligatory precaution, those prayers that had become obligatory at a specific time on account of a vow. However, the prayers of Eid al‑Fiṭr and Eid al‑Aḍḥā cannot be made up, and the prayers that a woman does not perform while experiencing ḥayḍ or nifās are not required to be made up, irrespective of whether they are the daily prayers or other prayers. The rule concerning ṣalāt al‑āyāt will be mentioned later.
